Horizon: For years, explorers and archaeologists alike have been puzzled by Easter Island and the huge statues that adorn this remote place, constructed by Stone Age inhabitants who were cut off from the rest of the world until Dutch explorers went ashore on Easter Day 1722. The original population soon died out, taking their secrets with them. However, as this programme reports, recent research has finally solved the mysteries of the island, and can reveal who these people were, where they came from and the meaning of the colossal statues they constructed.
